Ted Herr’s Professional Page

I am retired and remaining active in the field of education.  I used to work part-time as a Math teacher and part-time as the English Learner Coordinator for the Roseville Joint Union High School District.

On this page you'll find descriptions and links for some of the projects I am responsible for.  You will also find descriptions and links for my published writing and my foray into entrepreneurship.

On the Job

Roseville Connected

Roseville Connected is a program funding by a grant from the city of Roseville to train parents on computers, provide refurbished computers for their homes, and subsidize internet service.  Our target audience is low-income families of students in the Roseville Joint Union High School District who do not have internet service at home.

Parent Ambassadors

Parent Ambassadors is a program funding by a grant from the city of Roseville to provide out-reach to parents.  Our target audiences include low-income families of students, families who do not have Internet access at home, and families of students who are struggling in school in the Roseville Joint Union High School District.  We do home and coffee shop visits to introduce them to the district’s online services, including access to grades, assignments and attendance data.  We help the parents set up accounts and show them how use the system as well as how to communicate with the personnel of their child’s school.

Yes We Can!

Yes We Can is a parent education program provided in English and Spanish.  The goal is to help parents support their students in being college ready.  It is currently operating at Roseville High and Antelope High, with plans to expand it to Oakmont High and Woodcreek High.  I wrote and present the materials at the monthly evening meetings.  We pair up our English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) meetings with Yes We Can.

In the Evenings

A Master Plan for English Learners

A Master Plan for English Learners is an online master plan designed to (a) educate staff about English learners, (b) provide a framework for developing an English learner program in the Roseville Joint Union High School District, and (c) break the old linear paradigm of paper-based planning and take it into hyperlinked cyberspace.

Writing

Problem Solving Strategies. Crossing the River with Dogs and Other Mathematical Adventures...

This is a textbook for mathematical problem solving.  There is a high school version, published by Key Curriculum Press, and a college version (published by John Wiley and Sons).

College Preparatory Mathematics (CPM)

I am a contributing writer for the CPM textbooks, which uses research on learning as a basis for a textbook.  Some of the features of the text include using a discovery approach, extensive use of cooperative learning, literacy and writing and approaching math from a problem-solving perspective.

Private Enterprise

Five Star Academy for Parent Engagement

Five Star Academy is a private venture to create and market materials and workshops for school and district parent involvement programs.  The curriculum is based in research by Dr. Joyce Epstein and other researchers.  The goal is parent engagement where parents learn how to help their students succeed and change behaviors towards that goal.  Success is measured by improvements in student achievement.
