The English Learner Leadership Team

Background

The English Learner Leadership Team is a group that meets monthly at rotating locations around the district. The purpose of the team is to oversee the English learner program for the district and to coordinate activities among the sites.

The team is led by the Coordinator of Intervention and Support, Ted Herr, and includes the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, Mr. John Montgomery, as well as the Dircotr of Categorical Programs, Mrs. Judy Fischer.

The team also includes representatives from each of the school sites. Staff and other members of the public are welcome to participate as well.

Goals of the ELLT

Major Agenda Themes

The major agenda topics for the 2011-2012 school year will be to:

• Finish review and revision of the Master Plan for English learners

• Provide guidance and review for the Economic Impact Aide reformulation and other revenue sources.

• Review district data on English learners.

• Review the research on long-term ELs by Freeman, Olsen and others to make program recommendations

• Review the current English Language Development program and recommend changes as needed.

• Review services for English learners throughout the district and recommend changes as needed.

• Consider the question "Who are our English Learners?"

• Review the English learner component of other programs, such as Special Education and AVID.

• Review the summer program and make recommendations.

Challenges

The 2011-2012 English Learner Leadership Team will have a number of stubstantial challenges to address. The distict has acknowledged it illegally withheld funding intended for the sites to supp[ort English learner programs in the last few years. The district has committed to becoming fully compliant with the law regarding English learners in all aspects.
